Here's a recipe for making Gulab Jamun, a popular Indian and Pakistani sweet dessert:
Ingredients:
1 cup milk powder
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons ghee or melted butter
3-4 tablespoons milk, or as needed to form a soft dough
Oil or ghee for frying
For the sugar syrup:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
4-5 cardamom pods, crushed
A few strands of saffron (optional)
1 teaspoon rose water or kewra water (optional)
Instructions:
1. In a bowl, combine the milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking soda. Add the ghee or melted butter and mix well.
2. Gradually add the milk, a little at a time, and knead the mixture into a soft dough. The dough should be smooth and not sticky. If it's too dry, add a little more milk. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, prepare the sugar syrup. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Add the crushed cardamom pods and saffron strands. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the syrup slightly thickens. Stir in the rose water or kewra water, if using, and set aside.
4. Heat oil or ghee in a deep frying pan over low to medium heat. While the oil is heating, shape the dough into smooth balls, about the size of small walnuts, making sure there are no cracks.
5. Fry the balls in batches, stirring gently to ensure even cooking, until they are golden brown. Remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.
6. Let the Gulab Jamuns cool for a few minutes, then gently place them in the warm sugar syrup. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.
7. Serve warm or at room temperature, garnished with chopped nuts if desired. Enjoy your homemade Gulab Jamuns!
