Gelada (Theropithecus gelada) is a unique primate species found primarily in the Ethiopian Highlands. Unlike other baboons, Geladas are almost exclusively grass-eaters, spending most of their time on the ground in large, social groups.
Classification of the Gelada:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates
Family: Cercopithecidae
Genus: Theropithecus
Species: T. gelada
This species is notable for its distinct physical features, including a heart-shaped patch of bare skin on the chest of both males and females, which becomes brighter in females when they are in estrus. Geladas communicate using a complex range of vocalizations, facial expressions, and gestures, making them a subject of interest in primate behavior studies.
