Building a squirrel house can be a fun and rewarding project. Here's a basic guide to help you get started:
Materials Needed:
1x6 or 1x8 lumber for the sides and floor
1x4 lumber for the roof and front/back panels
Nails or screws
Waterproof wood glue
Hinges (optional, for easy cleaning)
Tools Needed:
Saw (hand saw or circular saw)
Hammer or screwdriver
Tape measure
Pencil
Drill with bits
Steps to Build a Squirrel House:
Plan Your Design: Decide on the size and shape of your squirrel house. A simple design is a rectangular box with a sloped roof.
Cut the Wood: Using the saw, cut the lumber to the desired dimensions. You'll need two side panels, a floor panel, a front panel, a back panel, and two roof panels (one larger than the other for the slope).
Assemble the Box: Attach the side panels to the floor panel using nails or screws. Then, attach the front and back panels to the sides and floor to complete the box shape.
Add the Roof: Attach the larger roof panel to the top of the box, leaving an overhang on the front for protection from the elements. Attach the smaller roof panel to the back as a lid for easy cleaning.
Optional: Add Hinges: If you want to make the roof removable for cleaning, attach hinges to the back of the roof panel and the top edge of the back panel.
Install the Squirrel House: Place the squirrel house in a safe and secure location, such as high up in a tree or on a sturdy pole. Make sure it's out of reach of predators.
Add Bedding: Line the inside of the squirrel house with dry leaves, grass, or other soft materials to create a cozy nest for the squirrels.
Maintain and Monitor: Check the squirrel house regularly for damage or wear. Clean it out periodically to remove old bedding and debris.
